The Infant's Illustrated ABC Primer Book (1848)

This alphabet book and primer, published circa 1848, is an example of children's literature that focused on morality and religion moreso than entertaining children. Of particular note are pages 29-30 (numbered 30-31 on the page), which depict a woodcut of George Washington facing a couple verses of "Against Idleness and Mischief' by Isaac Watts. One can clearly see the Puritan influence in these two stanzas from the poem, which depict working bees as an ideal to follow and warn the reader that idle hands will be exploited by Satan, respectively.
