This chapbook contains two stories. The Children in the Wood tells of two innocent children who are orphaned and then killed for their inheritance by their evil uncle, and the doom that befalls that uncle for his crimes. Farmer Wilkins is the story of a virtuous farmer and his wife, who lived good lives, and adopted a son, who also lived a good life. These are morality tales intended to show the results of living well and living poorly.
The illustration on the front cover shows the robin who buried the babes with leaves after they died.
